loop back to where you began. The looping is the point: the story is structured so that
the branches fold back into each other rather than fanning out forever.&lt;&#x2F;p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Writing it taught me more about state than about storytelling. A branching narrative is a
state machine wearing a costume, and keeping track of what the player had already seen
across loops was most of the actual work.&lt;&#x2F;p&gt;
